While we were looking at numerous rugs of the more traditional style, our rug expert, Abdullah, pulled this one out of a large stack of other “Benis” but it was like no other we had seen. Typically, Beni Ouarain rugs are distinguished by a black wool design of diamonds, zigzags or abstract patterns woven into a white wool pile background. The design elements of this small area rug are woven with a a very dark brown sheep's wool. The background is a creamy, almost pale beige. Our expert in Meknes, Abdullah, calls this one the “Picasso Beni” for its creative use of diverse Berber design elements which include a checkerboard pattern - symbolic of a barley field, and several diamond shaped “lozenges” which depict a stylized lion’s paw. The triangular shapes and diagonal lines could be interpreted as mountains and fields. We believe the dark block near the top of the rug to be the weaver’s "signature". We promise you there is no other rug quite like this extraordinary work of Berber art.
