This beautiful vintage Glaoua carpet is a celebration of Berber artistry ~ a masterpiece of hand embroidery and hand knotting. The symbolism of this rug is derived from Berber tattoo designs woven with tremendous skill passed down from mother to daughter. In classic Glaoua tradition, it is distinctive for its combination of several weaving techniques.
The rich blues, greens, reds and other tones of this large geometric "painting" are derived from natural, vegetal dyes made from indigo, henna, madder root, saffron and almond leaves.
